Discover Uganda’s Beauty on the Mighty River Nile
White water rafting is one of the best things to do on a Uganda safari holiday! Taken along the Nile in Jinja, the adventure capital of Uganda, rafting is an outdoor adventure that will help you discover the country’s unspeakable beauty. Reaching Adrift, a person books at their Kampala office at 14 York Terrace, Kololo in Kampala. The wide range of accommodation includes chalets, dorms and camping overlooking the Nile, to suit all budgets, ages and tastes. Additionally, rafters can purchase souvenir pictures of their Nile Adventures from professional photographers at the site.
With Uganda continuing to win more accolades for being a major tourism destination, more great wonders possibly not known to local tourists continue to emerge, astounding people who visit the Pearl of Africa.
A recent visit at Adrift that is little known to Ugandan tourists showed stunning scenery most especially at the Wild Waters lodge, the magnificent birdlife at the site and professional gracious guides and waitresses who all add an appeal of the Adrift rafting trip. Being the only adventure company having a one stop centre offering white water rafting, bungee jumping, jet boating and river surfing on the Victorian source of the Nile near Bujagali Falls in Jinja, Adrift has managed to attract attention of majority adventurers.
With a daily free shuttle from Kampala to Jinja, after booking at their Kampala offices with a modest fee of $125 (about 325,000) for a day and $115 (299,000) for half day rafting respectively, guides are always ready to offer you breakfast upon arrival and take you through the drills of white water rafting.
“You shouldn’t carry any valuable save for the consortium you are going to raft in,” Yasin Magembe, a guide said at a recent visit of Adrift.
Equipped with paddles, life jackets and helmets, guests are treated to an exciting paddling of the inflatable boat/rafting boat as you navigate through Africa’s longest river, the Nile.
Minutes after the paddling, leads you to a great challenging but exciting experience as you are advised to hold on to the inflatable boat as the waves lead you to the rapid falls that force you down with the high water pressure.
With kayak operators and other rescuers waiting down the falls, one is most amused by the cheers from fellow rafters who have already completed the challenge giving an occurrence you can’t find anywhere in Uganda.
As one is marveling the rafting challenge, Captain Gav Fahey comes in with his wild jetting battle racing up and down the Nile rapids. At about 90kilometer per hour, the boat that comes with propulsion directed from side-to side gives another experience as it spins up to 360 degrees similar to
driving a car in a muddy surface.
The challenge that goes for $75 (about Shs 19500) per person also gives an experience you will long to forget.
As one marvels the country’s great wonders on the Nile, guides then take you to another exciting Nile High Bungee Jumping at a modest pay of Shs $115 (about Shs 299,000). Here, one is taken to a Nile High Tower of about 44meters and left to jump to the bottom with the first bounce near the water before rebounding high above the river and back.
Mr Fahey says the challenge is 100 percent safe and is built and operated to high specifications. “Because our tower has been built and operated to such high specifications, jumpers are much more likely to get injured on the road travel from or back to Kampala,” he says.
After the jet race, bungee jumping and water rafting, a guest is treated to spacious meals at the magnificent wild waters lodges. The beautiful scenery at the lodges and rare setting provides another experience that no guest will leave before paying $250 (about Shs 650,000) to spend a night.
The 1km raised wooden walkways connecting the rooms with the restaurant, bar and swimming pool in a forest naturalistic setting with rear birds squawks and a beautiful River Nile falls view leave lasting memories to a guest.
Although various prices have been tagged on different adventures, a person can take on one challenge or do them once for one day to five leaving Jinja concurring that ‘Uganda is a Perl of Africa’.

I don’t say it lightly when I say that Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is the most beautiful place I have ever visited. The jungle, the misty mountains, the people, and the gorillas make it an amazing place to be.
We stayed in the town of Buhoma, which is just about 10 meters outside of the National Park. We spend a lovely few days there hanging out with the locals and buying cheap but very well-carved, souvenirs, visiting orphanages and watching them sing, dance, and drum, and of course the mountain gorillas was an experience unmatched in nature for me. I treasured every second that I was there.
This is a good experience with the mountain gorillas. I have visited the mountain gorillas myself; you must visit them as stated here. If you need to compare prices and costs and make a decision as to which country to visit the gorillas (Rwanda or Uganda), read this comprehensive article on organizing a gorilla trekking safari in Africa.
Tracking Gorillas in Bwindi’s Oruzogo Gorilla Family
Gorilla Trekking remains one of the most magical and rewarding wildlife experiences in the natural world, one that I know is high on the wish list of Uganda’s tourists. An estimated 800 mountain gorillas are remaining on earth, approximately 480 of which reside in Bwindi National Park.
Oruzogo gorilla group is located in Ruhija together with Bitukura, and Kitaguriro (which is the gorilla family dedicated purely for research). This gorilla family can be trekked from Buhoma or Ruhija. The group consists of 16 individuals including 1 dominant silverback (named Tibirikwata) and two babies that were recently born. Although the sex of the two babies is yet to be established, the proud mothers are the cute adult females Birungi and Mutesi. The new babies join the posse of other infants Buchura and Kanywani who is Kakobe’s baby.
Naming all the 16 individuals save for the three infants who are currently known by their mothers’ identities like Mutesi baby or Birungi baby was completed before it was availed for tracking in 2012.
Other individuals in the group include Busungu(Meaning short tampered), Kashundwe, Nyakiina, Kaganga (the giant one), Otaka, Bwoba (the coward) Karimi (tongue) Kiromba, Katooto (the small one) Kanywani(meaning friendly, Kakobe who looks like a monkey and Buchura referring to the youngest or last born before the two newest babies came forth.
Read MoreComprehensive Car Rental Insurance and Its Importance
If you’ve ever rented a car, you’ve probably been warned by salespeople at the counter about the possible consequences of walking away without buying their company’s rental car insurance. Put on the spot, you might not feel confident about exactly what your current auto insurance covers. And that’s what rental companies are counting on along with their commissions for selling you the coverage.
Want to be prepared next time you’re renting a car in Uganda? We can help you understand whether you need rental car insurance and how to get it before you get to the rental counter.
Rental car insurance or your own auto insurance?
Here are the typical insurance options from rental car companies, along with how to determine if you already have coverage within your own auto insurance policy. Coverage from your own policy applies when you are using a rental car for personal, no business purposes. The rules may be different for business use of a rental car. Check with your insurer or employer for details about coverage when using a rental car for business.
Crashes and car theft
At the counter: A loss-damage waiver (LDW), also called a collision damage waiver (CDW), gets you off the hook for any damage to the rental vehicle or theft of the car. It’s technically not insurance but rather a waiver that says the rental car company won’t come after you.
Your policy: If you have collision and comprehensive coverage on your own policy, it generally will extend to a rental car. However, you will still be on the hook for your deductible.
Damage you do to others
At the counter: Supplemental liability protection will pay for damage you do to others’ vehicles or property. A typical limit is $1 million. If you have no auto insurance (for example, if you don’t own a car), you should buy this.
Your own policy: Your own liability insurance will cover you when you’re driving rental cars. If you have really minimal liability coverage on your auto policy, you could buy the supplemental protection to boost your coverage. But if that’s your situation, you’d be smarter to increase your own liability coverage anyway.
Injuries to you
At the counter: Personal accident insurance covers medical costs for you and your passengers if you’re involved in an accident. This includes ambulance, medical care and death benefits.
Your own policy: If you have health insurance, this coverage would largely be redundant. Similarly, if you are interested in death benefits, you should have a life insurance policy. Personal accident insurance also is not needed if you have personal injury protection or Med Pay through your auto policy.
Your stolen stuff
At the counter: Personal effects coverage pays for your belongings if they’re stolen from the rental car, up to a set dollar amount.
Your own policy: Your homeowners or renters insurance will cover your possessions if they are stolen, even away from home. To make a theft claim, you’ll need to file a police report, and your deductible amount will apply.
The credit card safety net
Credit cards often provide coverage for rental cars, assuming you have used the card to pay for the rental and the rental is in your name. You’ll automatically have this coverage if it’s included with your credit card — no need to call or sign forms. But it is secondary coverage, meaning your own auto insurance policy will pay out first. If you don’t have auto insurance and are going to count on credit card coverage, call your credit card issuer to confirm the details.
Buying rental car insurance on your own
There are companies that sell standalone policies for rental cars if you don’t want to buy insurance at the counter. You generally need to decline the rental company’s coverage to use these.
Is car rental insurance really necessary?
That’s the first question people ask. The short answer is “yes.” But that doesn’t mean that you need the expensive stuff that your rental car agency is trying to push. There are some important things you need to think about before you waive the right to car rental insurance on your rental car agreement, however.
First, we’ll talk about what car rental insurance purchased through the rental agency can cover:
- Car rental insurance carries a waiver called a loss/damage waiver that releases renters from liability should their rental car be stolen, vandalized or damaged in a collision.
- Car rental insurance policies can also include personal accident insurance, which covers medical costs for you and any passengers due to injuries sustained in an accident with your rental car.
- Most car rental insurance policies carry personal effects coverage, which covers any personal items damaged in a collision or stolen from the rental car.
- Car rental insurance policies also usually include liability insurance that covers third party costs for both medical care and property damage if another vehicle is involved in an accident and the fault for the accident lies with the rental car driver.
