Golden monkeys in Uganda are a rare and beautiful primate species found in the Virunga Mountains that are shared by the three countries of Uganda, Rwanda and Democratic Republic of Congo. These striking creatures, known for their beautiful golden-orange fur, are an endangered species and are closely related to other types of Old-World monkeys.
About Golden Monkeys
Scientifically known as Cercopithecus kandti, Golden monkeys have a striking appearance, with reddish-gold fur on their backs and flanks, contrasting with their black limbs, faces, and tails. Their faces are expressive, and their agile movements make them captivating to watch.
In size, these primates are relatively small, with males weighing about 15 kg (33 lbs) and females about 10 kg (22 lbs). Golden monkeys primarily feed on bamboo shoots, leaves, fruits, and insects and are known for traveling in groups as they forage through the bamboo forests of the park.
Also, Golden monkeys are social animals and live in groups of 30 to 80 individuals. They are active, playful, and fast-moving, making them an entertaining species to observe in their natural habitat.
Where to See Golden Monkeys in Uganda
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
This is the only place in Uganda where you can see golden monkeys. In southwestern part of Uganda, Mgahinga gorilla national park is part of the larger Virunga Conservation Area, which extends into Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The park is famous not only for gorillas but also for its population of golden monkeys, which live in the bamboo forests at the base of the Virunga Volcanoes.
Golden monkey trekking
The exciting activity where visitors are allowed to spend some of the precious time with the amazing golden monkeys in the bamboo forests of Mgahinga gorilla national park is called Golden monkey trekking. The encounter starts at the Mgahinga Gorilla National Park headquarters, where visitors are briefed before heading into the forest and then follow the researchers and local rangers in the forests. The trek can take 2 to 4 hours, depending on where the monkeys are located. The hike typically isn’t as demanding as gorilla trekking, as the monkeys tend to stay in the lower bamboo zones. Once you locate the species, you’ll have about one hour to observe and photograph them as they feed, leap between bamboo trees, and interact with each other.
Cost of the The Golden Monkey Habituation Experience
As of 2024 Uganda wildlife tariff, a golden monkey trekking permit costs around USD $60. Permits can be arranged through Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) or via tour operators. It’s recommended to book in advance, especially during peak tourist seasons (June to September and December to February).
